SC2019 Work Group Report-Out Enhances Collective Work

The Sustainable Cleveland 2019 All-Work Group report-out earlier this week convened more than 70 people representing almost all of the working groups. Invitations were also extended to individuals who wanted to reconnect with SC2019 or to get involved for the first time. The purpose of the event was to provide a venue for working groups to share what they are working on, what resources can support their work and how other people can get involved. The event was hosted by E4S at the Great Lakes Brewing Company Tasting room.

Some themes that emerged from the report-outs

    * Opportunities for collaborations among the working groups.

    * Cross-sector connections between public, private, nonprofit and individuals that are strengthening successes of working groups.

    * More focus on advocacy and volunteerism as an opportunity for people to become involved

    * The announcement of pilot projects to start making tangible progress toward our 2019 goals.

We are inviting each work group to give a 3 minute update answering 3 questions:

1. What are you working on that you are excited about?

2. What resources do you need to support your work?

There will be time for open space and to connect with each other after the report-outs.

Get in on the action -- SC2019 Green Building Retrofit Committee 2011 Action Areas

Looking to get involved in the Sustainable Cleveland initiatives? Join the Green Building Retrofit Committee.  During the committee meeting in January, we identified the following 2011 action areas:

Advocacy – led by Mandy Metcalf (mmetcalf@ehw.org) - This action area will foster advocacy and awareness efforts on building and energy codes at municipal, county and state levels.

Small Business/Retail – led by Wendy Albin Sattin (wendy@cndc2.org) - Building on the residential market planning and momentum established last year, this committee will focus on the expansion of green retrofit and energy efficiency adoption to small business owners particularly in retail and storefronts spaces.

Case Studies/Market Data – led by Dave Simons (dls932@yahoo.com), Jeff Anderle (janderle@sustain-rhythm.com) and Robert Svets (robsvets@aol.com) - The need to quantify and tell the stories of retrofit and energy efficiency arguments is critical to furthering adoption.  In this action area, participants will work to define a template to tell the story and identify data sources - 1st meeting, February 1st at 8:30 am (Arabica at 818 East 185th Street

Please contact the individual leaders to participate in one the action areas.

We will also be contributing content and ideas to the 2011 Year of Energy Efficiency Celebration Committee.

At our next full committee meeting (February 10 at 8:00 am, 3500 Lorain Avenue), we will discuss the proposed objectives and first steps for each area

Clarity, green building and ROI

Solar panels on Cleveland Environmental CenterLast year, Sustainable Rhythm and the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the USGBC conducted the "Opening the Door to Green Building" study to measure the market perceptions of the industry in Ohio (check out GCBL's coverage here). Having just completed the Opening the Door to Green Building study in two more regions (Alberta and North Carolina-Triangle Region), I will be posting a comparison of the three regions in the near future.  I did want to share the following reflection on what I have heard in reviewing the responses of nearly 700 participants...

What I have discovered through the studies is that there is three sets of ROI: 1.) the softer attributes of building green—i.e. social responsibility, sustainability policy and branding for employee retention and/or competitive stance 2.) the more traditional sense of ROI —i.e. decrease in expenses due to energy efficiency, lower water usage, productivity/health, mitigation of storm water fees, higher rental absorption and premiums, increase in market value and 3. ) the return on investment for the planet i.e. lower energy use, reduction in carbon footprint, resources conservation, etc. (no surprise that these reflect the Triple Bottom Line).

How you can participate in the 2011 Year of Energy Efficiency

Dreyfull-Wells green-built homeThe Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Green Building Retrofit Group kicked off the 2011 Year of Energy Efficiency by compiling this impressive list of actions and resources for energy efficiency at home and at the office. (If you want to add to it, please log in and add a comment at the end).

Also, after you’ve read it through, and if you want to hear more about how to take simple actions, attend next week’s SC2019/E4S meeting on the 2011 Year of Energy Efficiency (check out the impressive panel).
