Proto-urbanist and author Jane Jacobs championed efforts to revitalize street life in cities like Boston (and Cleveland). Eyes on the street is the sense of security created by a vibrant urban place — a sense that people are looking out from the warm glow of shops and restaurant windows and pedestrians going to and fro. It can stem dereliction and crime, Jacobs argued.
