With most of the world's people now living in cities, the future of the planet depends on creating urban places that satisfy human needs without despoiling the natural systems upon which all life depends. In the coming months, two international conferences will offer glimpses into how the world's most forward-looking cities are becoming more sustainable — Global City 2006 this May in Lyon, France, and the UN-sponsored World Urban Forum III this June in Vancouver, Canada.
